This course provides an introduction to legal terminology, primarily derived from Latin (Latinisms), as well as Latin expressions (expressions used in authentic form) that are still used in the field of law, and also in other areas of our life. Namely, the course attendees will be convinced that this is not a “dead” language, but a language that is still used in modern languages and is used in forming new terms, especially in science. Additionally, the course provides basic communication in Latin, which is not burdened with grammar, and enables the listed contents to be mastered, according to the Cambridge program (the life and family of Caecilius whose home was found in the ruins of Pompeii, is followed). The course will enable the attendees to use the Latin terminology and Latin expressions and to operate with them appropriately.
In fact, the objective of the course is practical. Therefore, it is not intended the contents to be studied comparatively, but essentially, by getting acquainted with the context of the Roman law and Roman culture in general, which are the basis of the modern European culture. This way of learning enables easy memorizing of the terminology and applying it in various situations.
The planned expressions and Latinisms are divided into several topics, which refer to:
In addition to getting acquainted with the context and exercises for the correct use of Latinisms and phrases, within each topic it has been planned the Latin to be followed through the family of Caecilius, which provides a basic introduction to Latin.

The course “Latin for jurists” was very useful for me because it gave me a new perspective on the Latin terminology. This was not only dull learning of legal terms, but a deeper insight into legal terminology and Latin, and by comparing historical and cultural features, enabled me to understand better the meaning of many of the frequently used legal terms and their origin and context. To sum up, the course is very useful and I will recommend to anyone who has any contact with legal terminology or language learning. – Sanja Daneva, certified court translator.
All good things come to an end and that is what happened with the Latin Course for Jurists. I have never studied Latin and I have learned a lot about Latin from this course”– Bojan Stefanovikj, a student at the Faculty of Law within ISU.
I highly recommend the course “Latin for jurists” to all current and future lawyers, as well as to everyone who is in touch with the Latin Legal terminology. The course was very useful and instructive for me, because it gave me a wide interpretation and understanding of legal terminology, the expressions (so-called Latinisms), which we use every day, and are derived from Latin. In addition to learning Latin and legal terminology, the course introduced me to the life of the ancient Romans and the important historical facts of their time. The course itself is designed and adapted to modern trends and is very interactive and entertaining. – Lidija, Grupcheva, jurist.
